Coinbase Expands Trading Platform with U.S. Stock Options
Coinbase has expanded its U.S. brokerage services by introducing stock options to its platform, further integrating traditional financial instruments with its existing crypto offerings. Eligible U.S. customers with a Coinbase Capital Markets brokerage account can now trade long call and put contracts, allowing them to speculate on stock price movements without directly owning the shares. Each options contract represents 100 shares and carries the risk of losing the entire premium invested.
The addition of stock options aligns with Coinbase’s “Everything Exchange” strategy, aiming to provide a unified platform for managing various financial assets. The company has already integrated stocks, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies into a single account, with options adding another layer of traditional market exposure for traders.
Coinbase Capital Markets operates under FINRA and SIPC regulations, with securities services handled by Apex Clearing Corporation. This regulatory structure ensures that the company’s traditional and crypto-related services remain distinct. The move comes as Coinbase seeks to diversify its revenue streams beyond spot crypto trading, potentially increasing customer engagement by consolidating multiple financial activities on one platform.
Despite the new offering, Coinbase’s shares fell nearly 9% from September 22 to October 2, closing at $183. However, the stock rebounded slightly with a 2.5% gain in premarket trading on October 5, reflecting broader crypto-market trends rather than a direct response to the options launch. The company’s next challenge is maintaining regulatory compliance and liquidity while attracting sustained options trading volume.
