Coinbase Fires Back at Ethereum Community Criticism Over ETH Holdings
Coinbase has come under fire from Ethereum community members over its alleged dumping of ETH in favor of Bitcoin. However, the company's executive Jesse Pollak fired back at these accusations by pointing out that Coinbase holds more ETH than any non-DAT entity.
Pollak stated on X that Coinbase is 'the largest non-DAT holder of ETH by an order of magnitude,' with a treasury holding between 115,000 and 151,000 ETH worth approximately $300 million. This claim aims to put some distance between the company and the narrative that it's quietly rotating out of Ethereum.
The criticism has been building for months, with community members pointing to Coinbase's apparent preference for accumulating BTC on its corporate balance sheet while treating ETH more as an operational asset than a conviction hold. However, Pollak reframed the conversation entirely by highlighting Coinbase's contributions to the Ethereum ecosystem, including work on EIP-4844 and the co-creation of USDC.
Pollak also emphasized the sheer number of users Coinbase has onboarded to Ethereum, arguing that bringing millions of people into the ecosystem counts for more than any single treasury decision. This move is seen as an attempt to shift the focus away from the company's ETH holdings and towards its overall impact on the Ethereum community.
