Coinbase Halts IP Trading During Conversion to DATA Token
Coinbase temporarily halted trading for the IP token on October 5, 2026, as part of its conversion to the DATA token. The exchange expects trading for the renamed token to resume on October 7, 2026, following the migration period, which runs from October 5 to October 7. During this time, Coinbase advised users not to deposit or transfer IP tokens.
The conversion is part of a broader rebranding initiative by Story, which is transitioning to the DATA Foundation. The Story Network is also being rebranded as the DATA Network, and the IP token is converting to DATA on a one-to-one basis. Token holders do not need to take any action for this migration, though the guidance does not apply to how other exchanges or holders may manage the change.
Originally, Story was an onchain system for registering and licensing intellectual property. The DATA Foundation has shifted its focus to AI training data, with the DATA Network designed to support data sourcing, processing, verification, and licensing. The Foundation also offers Trace, a public audit and search platform for assets registered on DATA Network, and Poseidon, a tool for processing raw data. As of June, Kled had registered over 1.1 billion records on DATA Network, with a goal of reaching 1.5 billion assets.
Coinbase has indicated that DATA trading is expected to begin on October 7, 2026, though the notice does not confirm that trading has resumed.
