Coinbase Introduces Slack Bot for AI-Driven Instant Micropayments
Coinbase has developed an internal Slack bot that allows AI agents to autonomously purchase services on demand using USDC micropayments. The company demonstrated the bot in August 2026, built on its Developer Platform, which integrates with AWS's Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments and searches the x402 Bazaar marketplace for relevant services.
The bot plugs into a predefined spend limit and completes transactions instantly, with costs running at fractions of a cent. This is made possible by Coinbase's open HTTP-native protocol, x402, which was introduced on May 6, 2025. The protocol gives the 'Payment Required' error code (HTTP status code 402) a practical use: machines can request services, servers respond with payment instructions, and machines pay and retry without human involvement.
The broader concept Coinbase is advancing is Agentic Payments, which enables AI agents to transact economically, not just converse. This technology has the potential to close the gap between what an agent can do and what it can access, as seen in a customer support agent paying 10 cents for real-time tracking data without setting up a billing relationship in advance.
