Coinbase Launches Khan vs Simes Prediction Market
Coinbase has launched a prediction market titled "Khan vs Simes" on its platform, allowing users to trade contracts on the outcome of a future event. The market has attracted significant interest, with a total trading volume of $1,341,703.12 and a total value of $3.4 million. The market is set to expire on October 7, 2026, or earlier if the outcome is determined before then.
The prediction market operates by offering "Yes" or "No" contracts on specific events. Each contract pays $1 if the event occurs and $0 if it does not. The price of the contract reflects the market's odds of the event happening. For example, a price of $0.65 indicates a 65% chance of the event occurring. Users can buy "Yes" if they believe the event will happen or "No" if they think it will not.
To participate in the prediction markets, users need a Coinbase account and must complete onboarding with Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM). This includes identity verification and providing basic income and net worth details. Once approved, users can fund their accounts and start trading. The platform allows trading with cash (USD and USDC) from the main Coinbase account, which is moved to the derivatives account for positions.
Coinbase emphasizes that trading prediction contracts involves substantial risk and may result in the loss of the entire investment. The platform is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and is a member of the National Futures Association. Users are advised to understand the product and assess its appropriateness for their financial situation before trading.
