Coinbase Launches NFL Prediction Market for Chargers vs Seahawks
Coinbase has introduced a new prediction market centered around the outcome of the NFL game between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Seattle Seahawks. The market, which allows users to trade contracts based on the game's result, has attracted significant interest with a total trading volume of $11 million and $7,029,623.84 in interest. The market is set to expire on October 4, 2026, or earlier if the game's outcome is determined.
The prediction market operates by offering 'Yes' or 'No' contracts on the game's outcome. Each contract pays $1 if the event happens and $0 if it does not. The price of the contracts reflects the market's odds, allowing users to bet on the likelihood of a specific outcome. Users need a Coinbase account and must complete onboarding to Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM) to participate. Once approved, they can fund their accounts and start trading using cash (USD and USDC).
The settlement process involves an independent, regulated exchange determining the result using a stated 'source of truth,' such as official data or trusted news. Payouts are made to traders after settlement, although delays may occur due to bank holidays, weekends, or confirmation processes. Fees are applied to each trade, covering operational costs and broker fees. Trading is available 24/7, except during weekly maintenance windows.
