Coinbase Launches Prediction Market for Event Outcomes
Coinbase has introduced a unique prediction market that allows users to trade contracts on future events. The platform, operated by Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), a regulated derivatives entity, enables trading on outcomes in various domains, including crypto, economics, politics, sports, entertainment, technology, and science. Each contract pays $1 if the event happens and $0 if it does not, with the price reflecting the market’s odds.
The current featured market is a head-to-head comparison between Martinique and El Salvador, set to expire by October 6, 2026. The market has already seen significant interest, with a total trading volume of $3.8 million and accrued interest of $2,024,616.38. The platform emphasizes transparency, with clear rules and settlement policies based on official data or trusted news sources.
To participate, users need a Coinbase account and must complete onboarding with CFM, which includes identity verification and basic financial details. Funds can be transferred from the main Coinbase account to the derivatives account for trading. Payouts are made after settlement, though delays may occur due to banking hours or third-party confirmation of results.
Coinbase highlights the risks involved in trading prediction contracts, noting that they may result in the loss of the entire investment.
