Coinbase has launched a new prediction market allowing users to trade contracts on future events, including crypto, economics, politics, sports, entertainment, technology, and science. Each contract pays $1 if the event happens and $0 if it does not, with the price reflecting the market’s odds. For example, a price of $0.65 indicates a 65% chance of the event occurring.
To participate, users need a Coinbase account and must complete onboarding to Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), the regulated derivatives entity. This includes identity verification and providing basic income/net worth details. Once approved, users can fund their accounts and start trading using cash (USD and USDC) from their main Coinbase account.
Each market has clear rules explaining how the outcome is decided, with settlement based on an independent, regulated exchange using a stated “source of truth.” Payouts happen after settlement, though transfers may be delayed on U.S. bank holidays, weekends, or outside banking hours. Trading is available 24/7, except during a weekly maintenance window from Thursday 3:00-5:00 am ET.
Coinbase emphasizes that trading prediction contracts involves substantial risk and may result in the loss of the entire investment. The platform is not liable for any errors or delays in content, and the information provided is for informational purposes only, not investment advice.
