Coinbase Outshines Strategy as Leverage Fails to Deliver
Two major players in the cryptocurrency market are Coinbase Global, Inc. (NASDAQ:COIN) and Strategy Inc (NASDAQ:MSTR). While both have been impacted by the recent downturn in crypto prices, there's a significant difference between their business models.
Coinbase is an exchange that generates revenue through fees on trading activities. The company has added new services such as custody, staking, and subscription revenue to its offerings. Over the past year, Coinbase produced around $6 billion in revenue, while Strategy generated under $500 million.
Strategy's market value is based on its claim on a large pile of Bitcoin, which it owns through borrowed money. This has led to a premium valuation for the company, with a market cap of approximately $66 billion compared to Coinbase's $52 billion. However, this premium exists because Strategy offers leveraged exposure to Bitcoin, and while it worked in favor of investors when prices rose, it will amplify losses if prices fall.
Coinbase has its own set of advantages, including licenses that are difficult to obtain in the US and a fee stream that continues regardless of market conditions. The company reported a net loss over the past year, but this was largely due to marking down the value of its crypto holdings rather than failing to cover costs.
In contrast, Strategy's losses were directly tied to the decline in Bitcoin prices, which led to a significant write-down of its assets. With a debt burden of around $7 billion and rising interest rates, Coinbase is seen as a more stable investment option.
