Coinbase Premium Index Hits One-Month Low Amid Waning US Interest
The Coinbase Premium Index has fallen to its lowest level in about a month, signaling waning enthusiasm among US market participants. As of mid-September, the index recorded a seven-day negative streak at -0.0205%, its worst sustained reading since August 24. During this stretch, Bitcoin was trading near $75,600 to $75,800, a price level that didn't seem to entice American buyers.
The Coinbase Premium Index serves as a gauge of US crypto appetite, working like a thermometer. When Bitcoin trades at a higher price on Coinbase than on global exchanges like Binance, the index goes positive, indicating US buyers are willing to pay more. Conversely, when it flips negative, US demand is softer than international demand or American holders are selling more aggressively.
This latest dip is notable but not unprecedented. Before briefly turning positive on August 24, the index had been negative for 97 consecutive days stretching back to May 19. The current slide suggests that the August reprieve was short-lived.
