Coinbase Prepares for AI Agent Payments in Growing Machine Economy

Share

Coinbase is building infrastructure to support AI agent payments, says CEO Brian Armstrong. The company's x402 payment protocol allows AI agents to pay for services in stablecoins without human intervention. This shift is part of a growing machine economy where AI agents discover and make transactions automatically.

Armstrong sees stablecoins as the natural rail for this emerging market, and Coinbase is already building on that idea. The company's x402 protocol allows AI agents to pay for APIs, data, software, and other services directly in stablecoins, without conventional checkout flows.

BlackRock recently predicted that AI agents could become a major source of stablecoin demand, and Armstrong agrees with this assessment. He sees three key steps driving the growth of AI agent payments: more agents will be built, these agents will need to transact, and crypto and stablecoins will be their preferred payment method.
