Coinbase Prepares for Post-Quantum Computing Risks with Fallback Architecture
Crypto exchange Coinbase is taking proactive steps to prepare for the potential risks of post-quantum computing, which could compromise Bitcoin's security. According to Yehuda Lindell, Coinbase's head of cryptography, the company is building a fallback architecture using adaptable Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) that can support any future Bitcoin signing scheme.
This move comes as Google researchers in Q1 2026 projected that the timeline for a potential 'Q-day' threat has been moved to 2029. The effort aims to protect institutional custody, including roughly $250 billion tied to BlackRock's spot Bitcoin ETF.
Some networks like Ethereum and XRP have published post-quantum signature roadmaps, but Bitcoin upgrades are lagging due to governance and dormant-asset issues. Lindell emphasized that the approach is necessary because different blockchains may not use the same signing scheme.
