Coinbase Prepares Quantum-Resistant Bitcoin Custody Plan Amid Growing Sector Fears
Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is taking steps to prepare for the potential impact of quantum computers on Bitcoin's safety. With some platforms already looking to protect assets in case a powerful enough quantum computer breaks digital cryptography, Coinbase aims to be ready regardless of individual network compatibility.
According to Yehuda Lindell, Coinbase's head of cryptography, their approach is key because retooling might differ. 'It’s unlikely that there will be a single signing scheme that everybody will use,' Lindell explained. 'That means we have to be prepared and ready for the different outcomes on different blockchains… I will be able to say, 'I can support anything.' We don’t have the fear that some blockchain is going to decide to use something that we just won’t be able to support.'
The exchange has set a goal to secure assets worth about $250 billion from multiple institutions. To achieve this, they are researching a fallback plan based on Hardware Security Modules (HSMs), which would allow them to adapt to any signing scheme Bitcoin adopts.
