Coinbase Global (COIN) reported mixed earnings for the third quarter of 2026, highlighting a persistent challenge with low cryptocurrency trading volume despite a recent rally in crypto prices. Net revenue dropped 35% from last year to $1.2 billion, though diluted earnings per share improved to $2.51 from $1.50. The earnings benefited from a $715 million gain on cryptocurrency investments, which masked an otherwise break-even performance.
The company's spot trading volume fell 54% year-over-year and 9.7% from the previous quarter, reaching $134.5 billion. This decline led to a 44% decrease in transaction revenue to $590 million. The weak trading volume remains a significant issue, as even a 30% rally in crypto prices failed to boost trading activity as expected.
Despite these challenges, Coinbase's new prediction market business showed promising results, achieving a $200 million annual run rate. This development aligns with the company's broader strategy to diversify its product offerings beyond cryptocurrency trading. Morningstar maintained its $168 fair value estimate for Coinbase, considering the shares fairly valued at current levels.
Looking ahead, Coinbase is expected to benefit from rising interest rates through its stablecoin business. The third-quarter results underscore both the opportunities and risks associated with the company's evolving strategy, as it seeks to balance its reliance on volatile trading conditions with new revenue streams.
