Coinbase Reverses Name Change, Renames Base App to Coinbase Wallet
Coinbase has renamed its Base App to Coinbase Wallet, reversing a decision made in July 2025.
The move comes as part of a shift in strategy by Jesse Pollak, the developer leading the Ethereum Layer 2 network known as Base. In his announcement, Pollak explained that from now on, the name 'Base' will refer specifically to the blockchain and its ecosystem, while 'Coinbase Wallet' will be used for Coinbase's self-custody wallet app.
According to Pollak, Coinbase Wallet will continue to serve as a gateway to Base assets, markets, and apps. He emphasized that the focus of Base in 2026 will be on trading, financing, and payments, with a continued emphasis on decentralization.
Pollak had previously acknowledged in July that his earlier strategy focusing on on-chain social networks may have been misguided. At that time, he announced plans to hand over management of the Base App to Cobie, a well-known crypto investor.
