Coinbase Scammer Sentenced to 12 Years for $16 Million Heist
A 23-year-old Brooklyn man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for stealing nearly $16 million from Coinbase users through a sophisticated social engineering operation.
Ronald Spektor pleaded guilty to all 31 counts against him, including first-degree money laundering and grand larceny, after initially pleading not guilty. He was able to convince actual Coinbase customers that he worked for the company and that their cryptocurrency was in immediate danger.
Spektor would contact users while posing as a legitimate representative of Coinbase, warning them that hackers had compromised or were about to compromise their accounts. He instructed victims to move their assets to a supposedly secure wallet, which he could access.
The scammer used encrypted messaging platforms such as Telegram and Discord to discuss successful thefts and swapped stolen cryptocurrency for other digital goods, including online storefront purchases and gambling services.
