Coinbase Secures DCO Registration, Completes Vertical Integration

Coinbase has completed its vertical integration by securing a Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO) registration from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), allowing it to operate as an end-to-end ecosystem.

The approval, granted on September 28, 2026, completes Coinbase's stack from exchange to brokerage to clearinghouse and marks a significant shift in how digital asset market structure is organized.

Coinbase will now use USDC as the native collateral for its clearinghouse, enabling 24/7 settlement without relying on external partners or traditional fiat settlement cycles.

The CFTC has granted this approval only for fully collateralized futures, options, and swaps, but Coinbase gains control over the entire trade lifecycle by moving to an internal clearing model.
