Coinbase Seeks SEC Nod for Equity Perpetuals

Share

Coinbase has filed for SEC approval to offer equity perpetuals, according to Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad. Perpetuals are derivative contracts that track underlying assets and do not expire, allowing traders to hold positions indefinitely.

This move is seen as an opportunity for US investors to access regulated pathways, with equity perps already proving demand internationally. The crypto exchange received CFTC approval earlier this year to offer perpetual crypto futures alongside prediction markets platform Kalshi.

Kalshi has filed for CFTC approval to launch equity index perpetuals, putting it in direct competition with incumbent exchanges. The regulator's greenlight has weighed on the sentiment of exchange stocks in the first half of the year, which are recovering from a selloff.
