Coinbase Sees Record Crypto Market Share Amid Q2 Earnings Miss
Coinbase's second-quarter results were mixed, with the crypto exchange missing Wall Street estimates on profitability. Despite capturing a record 10.3% share of global crypto trading volume, Coinbase's net loss widened to $359 million, significantly more than analysts' expectations of a roughly $122 million loss.
The company attributed the decline in transaction revenue to weaker consumer and institutional trading activity amid a 25% quarter-over-quarter drop in total crypto spot trading volume. This was also due to lower market volatility and weaker crypto prices.
Coinbase generated around $1.2 billion in net revenue, roughly in line with expectations but down 19% from a year earlier. Transaction revenue totaled $599 million, below analyst estimates of $636 million, while subscription and services revenue came in at $555 million, missing the $590 million consensus estimate.
The exchange posted growth in derivatives, stablecoins, and tokenized finance, however. Coinbase is positioning itself as an 'Everything Exchange,' broadening its business beyond spot cryptocurrency trading into these areas.
