Coinbase Sees Trading Revenue Plunge Amid Crypto Market Downturn
Coinbase's Q2 earnings report revealed a deepening downturn in trading revenue and subscription performance, despite a steady increase in market share. Trading revenue fell by 19% year-on-year, with spot trading volume dropping significantly quarter-over-quarter.
The company attributed the decline to a sluggish crypto market and geopolitical frictions, which led to unstable interest rate expectations and a sharp decrease in global capital flow towards the sector.
Coinbase's subscription revenue outside of trading also took a hit, falling 12% year-on-year and 5% quarter-over-quarter. However, stablecoin revenue remained relatively stable, while staking revenue was negatively impacted by declining underlying token market values and yields.
The company's guidance for Q3 subscription revenue is flat quarter-over-quarter but lower than market expectations, indicating a slow recovery in the short term.
