Coinbase Shifts Gears Amidst Market Downturn
After two consecutive quarters of losses, Coinbase is shifting its focus to alternative revenue streams. Despite a 25% quarter-on-quarter decline in global cryptocurrency spot trading volume, the exchange's market share rose to 10.3%, a new company record.
Coinbase's financial report shows that its total second-quarter revenue fell to $12.20 billion, with a GAAP net loss of $359 million. However, the company's subscription and services revenue accounted for 48% of this quarter's net revenue, indicating a significant shift towards stablecoins and derivatives.
The exchange disclosed that its stablecoin revenue for the quarter was $292 million, largely driven by interest on reserve assets and partnership revenue. The average USDC balance within Coinbase's products has risen to $20 billion, with over 30% of USDC circulation within its products by the end of the quarter.
Coinbase emphasized global perpetual contracts, U.S. compliant channels, and Deribit integration in its financial report, aiming to connect spot, stablecoins, and derivatives on the same liquidity pool. The company's adjusted EBITDA for the same period was $208 million, remaining positive for 14 consecutive quarters.
