Coinbase Shifts Lobbying Strategy Amid Clarity Act Failure
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has shifted his company's lobbying strategy in response to the failure of the Clarity Act, which aimed to establish a federal regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. The bill stalled due to political interference and now appears unlikely to pass.
Armstrong acknowledged the setback and stated that Coinbase would engage directly with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to discuss regulation. This marks a fundamental shift in the industry's lobbying strategy, seeking to address legislative gaps through administrative regulatory channels.
The SEC has been active recently, permitting U.S. trading platforms to offer tokenized equity services subject to stringent conditions. The CFTC also approved the listing of perpetual contracts related to precious metals on the prediction market platform Kalshi.
Armstrong noted that while the legislation should have been a positive development for the United States, it translates into heightened competitive pressure from Wall Street giants. He stated that perhaps choosing the current path of regulatory engagement is more advantageous for Coinbase, as it is one of the few firms willing to persist on this challenging route.
