Coinbase Stock Plummets Amid Weaker Than Expected Q2 Earnings
Coinbase's stock plummeted to its lowest level in roughly two and a half years after the company reported weaker-than-expected second-quarter earnings. The largest publicly traded cryptocurrency exchange in the United States missed expectations across nearly every major financial metric, with $1.22 billion in revenue and $208 million in adjusted EBITDA.
The disappointing results were attributed to a punishing crypto trading environment, with lower crypto prices and subdued trading volumes dragging down both transaction revenue and the company's growing subscription business. Several firms, including JPMorgan and Mizuho, cut their price targets for Coinbase, but maintained Buy or Outperform ratings.
While some analysts, such as William Blair, saw the post-earnings selloff as a buying opportunity, others warned that hopes of a recovery may be premature. Benchmark's Mark Palmer argued that the quarter provided 'additional validation of the strategic transformation' underway at Coinbase for the better part of three years.
Coinbase has been trying to expand its offerings, with prediction markets hitting a $100 million annualized revenue run rate and its paid subscription tier, Coinbase One, topping one million subscribers. However, analysts agreed that these newer segments are not yet large or predictable enough to replace lost trading revenue.
