Coinbase Stock Surges Despite Stalled Senate Bill
The Senate's crypto market structure bill has stalled again, failing to advance in its cloture vote. Despite the setback, Coinbase Global Inc.'s stock price rose by 5.08% to $204.12 on Monday.
This may seem counterintuitive given that the company had previously expressed support for the CLARITY Act, which aimed to hand over primary authority over digital assets to the CFTC. However, Coinbase's lobbying efforts were focused more on shaping the bill's language and ensuring it aligns with their long-term goals.
The company is already collecting revenue through its current model, which focuses on trading volume and volatility. According to William Blair analysts Andrew Jeffrey and Adib Choudhury, total trading volume is expected to fall by 44% this year before rebounding in 2027. They also predict that retail derivatives revenue will continue to grow, with over $200 million already being collected annually.
In the long term, an eventual CLARITY-style framework could open up new product lines for Coinbase and provide broader access to tokenized securities and derivatives. However, this is seen as a 2027 catalyst rather than something that will happen immediately.
