Coinbase Stock Tumbles Amid Interest Rate Fears, Regulatory Uncertainty

Coinbase's stock has dropped more than 60% over the past 12 months. The cryptocurrency exchange lost its appeal due to rising fears of interest rate hikes and other economic headwinds that have cooled off the crypto market.

The company generates most of its revenue by charging transaction fees for spot crypto trades, which are often affected by interest rates. When rates rise, the crypto market cools down, causing Coinbase's stock to decline.

Last year, many investors expected the Federal Reserve to cut rates in 2026 as inflation cooled, but the outbreak of the Iran war led to a surge in oil prices and renewed inflation concerns, prompting interest rate hike expectations. This has left the crypto market in a chilly state for the foreseeable future.

Coinbase also faces intense competition from Binance, traditional brokerages expanding into the crypto market, and fintech apps offering cryptocurrency trading. The company's stablecoins, which accounted for nearly a fifth of its revenue in 2025, are uncertain due to regulatory issues with the CLARITY Act.

Coinbase is cutting costs and pruning its workforce to offset pressure, but it posted back-to-back quarterly losses in the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026. Analysts expect Coinbase's revenue and adjusted EBITDA to grow at compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) of 5% and 7%, respectively, from 2025 to 2028.
