Coinbase Stumbles as Cryptocurrency Markets Weaken Again
Coinbase Global posted its third consecutive quarterly loss as the prolonged downturn in cryptocurrency markets continued to impact trading volumes. The company reported a transaction revenue drop of 21% to $599 million during the April-to-June quarter, down from $764 million a year earlier.
The weakness in the market has been ongoing since October when cryptocurrency markets reached record highs, and investors have been shunning riskier assets amid uncertainty over U.S. interest rates, geopolitical tensions, and persistent outflows from crypto investment products. As a result, Coinbase's shares fell 5.3% after the bell.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong expressed optimism about the Clarity Act, which has been introduced to provide regulatory clarity for digital-asset trading platforms. However, without a market turnaround, the company may look to accelerate adoption of stablecoins as an alternative revenue stream.
