Coinbase Surges as SEC Paves Way for Tokenized Equities
Coinbase stock surged 11.9% in afternoon trading after the SEC unveiled a five-year 'Innovation Exemption' that paves the way for permissioned blockchain venues to list and trade tokenized representations of U.S. stocks.
The order, which took effect immediately, exempts qualifying Tokenized Securities Venues from the Exchange Act's definition of an exchange and grants conditional dealer-registration relief to liquidity providers.
Morgan Stanley initiated coverage on Coinbase with an Equal Weight rating but a notably bullish $250 price target, framing the company as a key access and infrastructure provider as crypto integrates deeper into the regulated financial system.
The broader crypto market provided a powerful macro backdrop, with Bitcoin climbing sharply and Ethereum posting strong gains, lifting the entire category of crypto-linked equities.
