Coinbase Surpasses Industry Giants as Largest Operator of Agent Payments
Coinbase has become the largest operator of Agent payments, according to its own data. While many are debating which payment track will prevail and which protocol will become standard, Coinbase's dominance in this space is largely under the radar.
The company's Agentic Wallets, launched through its developer platform in February 2026, enable Agents to hold assets autonomously, initiate transfers, and execute transactions. This infrastructure is assembled from several components, including the Agent Kit, an open-source toolkit allowing developers to integrate wallet functions into any Agent system, the x402 protocol for machine-to-machine payment standards, and non-custodial wallets and security suites.
Coinbase's closed-loop ecosystem includes its Base chain, a Layer 2 network it operates, as well as native wrapped assets like cbBTC and cbETH. This positioning is distinct from that of Visa and Stripe, which focus on connecting Agents to existing payment networks and systems, respectively. Coinbase provides Agents with their own financial identity.
The benefits of this infrastructure are evident in the data: 90% of on-chain Agent transactions occur on the Base chain, 99% of Agent business transactions are settled in USDC, and over 97% use the x402 protocol. The trading volume of stablecoins on the Base chain accounts for 62% of the entire industry's stablecoin trading.
