Coinbase Takes Aim at Community Banking with Stablecoin Partnership
Coinbase is expanding its reach into America's community banking system through a new deal with payments company Moov. The partnership aims to bring stablecoin services directly into the existing payment systems used by over 1,000 community banks and credit unions in the US.
The move comes just days before the U.S. Senate is set to vote on the Clarity Act, a bill that has been pending for months and seeks to clarify how banks handle digital dollars. Coinbase and other crypto companies are urging senators to pass the bill, while some banking organizations have expressed concerns about reward payments in the form of stablecoins or other crypto assets.
Ryan VanGrack, vice chair and head of corporate affairs at Coinbase, said that smaller financial institutions have watched their customers use crypto for years. 'Community banks and credit unions have witnessed their customers use digital assets for years,' he stated.
The partnership between Coinbase and Moov will allow these banks to offer stablecoin services without requiring them to develop an entirely new crypto system. This could position community lenders to handle bigger transactions, such as funding that doesn't stop on weekends or holidays.
