Coinbase Unveils AI-Driven Trading Platform for Autonomous Agents
Coinbase has launched a new platform called 'Coinbase for Agents' that allows artificial intelligence bots to buy, sell, and pay for services without human intervention. The platform, which is currently live for developers and advanced users, empowers AI assistants to execute trades and make micro-payments on customers' behalf.
The tool bridges the gap between AI analytical reasoning and financial execution, enabling large language models like ChatGPT and Claude to execute asset trades and pay for services. To mitigate financial risk, the platform operates on a 'gift card' model, allowing users to isolate bots within sandboxed portfolios and set strict limits on transaction sizes, asset types, and spending caps.
Coinbase's machine learning protocol, x402, is also integrated into the platform, enabling AI agents to purchase technical resources on a per-use basis. This eliminates the need for bots to navigate traditional consumer barriers such as user logins, credit card entry, or monthly corporate subscriptions.
The launch of Coinbase for Agents comes as autonomous online activity surges, with nonhuman internet traffic already surpassing human activity. Industry projections estimate that automated agents could command roughly 20% of the global e-commerce landscape by 2030.
