Coinbase Unveils Digital Pack-Opening for Pokémon Cards

Share

Coinbase is set to revolutionize the Pokémon trading card market by introducing digital pack-opening mechanics within its platform.

The feature, which has been teased on X, allows users to rip open virtual Pokémon packs and view their contents in real-time. But here's the twist: each digital card corresponds to a physical card stored in a secure vault, giving collectors the option to have it shipped or keep it safe.

This isn't Coinbase's first foray into physical-backed digital collectibles. Back in May 2024, the exchange integrated with Courtyard, a platform that lets users mint tokenized versions of physical Pokémon cards. The integration brought digital reveals and automatic buyback options to collectors.

Coinbase is taking things further by bringing pack-opening mechanics directly into its own ecosystem rather than relying on third-party integrations. This move addresses the pain points in the traditional collectibles market, including authentication, storage, and liquidity issues.
