Coinbase Unveils Digital Packs Linked to Physical Trading Cards
Coinbase has unveiled a concept for digital packs tied to physical trading cards, allowing users to open packs on their phone and receive cards connected to physical collectibles. The proposed experience would let users keep the cards in custody, trade their digital ownership, or redeem the physical collectibles. This concept builds on existing services that allow users to trade ownership as cards remain in storage.
The trading-card industry already has established grading, price histories, storage, and resale infrastructure. Platforms like Courtyard and Phygitals connect with existing vaults, including those operated by PSA, Fanatics, and Alt, and support pack openings, marketplace trading, and physical redemption. Some platforms even pair randomized packs with instant buybacks, allowing users to return unwanted cards for credit and use that value to open another pack.
The model may indicate a broader shift in the crypto space toward representing existing physical goods on-chain instead of issuing only crypto-native assets. Trading cards offer a established grading and pricing system, while digital ownership provides another way to transfer a card that remains in storage.
