Coinbase Unveils Financial Accounts for AI Agents and Autonomous Systems
Coinbase is expanding its push into agentic finance by building financial accounts for artificial intelligence systems and autonomous agents. According to CEO Brian Armstrong, the company is creating a financial account for AI that will extend its existing agent wallets, stablecoin payments, and trading tools.
The plan builds on Coinbase's existing infrastructure, which already gives AI agents access to wallets that can hold assets, make payments, and execute trades. The company introduced Agentic Wallets in February as infrastructure specifically built for agents, with autonomous spending, earning, and trading capabilities alongside security guardrails.
The financial account concept matters because autonomous agents increasingly need to buy computing resources, data, APIs, and other digital services. Coinbase's x402 protocol allows software to make machine-to-machine payments in stablecoins when a service requests payment, creating a payment layer where an agent can transact without requiring human authorization.
