Coinbase Unveils Financial Accounts for Autonomous AI Agents
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has announced that the company is building payment infrastructure for AI. The initiative, called Coinbase for Agents, will give AI models their own equivalent of a bank account and allow them to manage money autonomously.
The idea was sparked by David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails, who posted about needing an 'agentic bank' where a machine could be given a spending limit and permission to operate independently. Armstrong responded immediately, confirming that Coinbase is indeed building the financial account for AI.
Already, models such as Claude or ChatGPT can be connected directly to Coinbase through a local MCP server. However, instead of receiving unrestricted access to their owner's cards, the AI gets a strictly isolated sub-account with daily spending limits and maximum transaction sizes set by the user. Armstrong is continually expanding the boundaries of this autonomy.
The launch of Coinbase for Agents followed an internal optimization campaign at the company in 2026, where around 14% of the workforce (around 700 employees) was cut to replace them with ultra-compact AI-native pods that orchestrate a fleet of AI agents. This model was then scaled up and tested on derivatives, S&P 500 stocks, and even allowed robots to independently plan trips through AWS AgentCore and pay for hotels on Travala using USDC stablecoins.
