Coinbase Wins CFTC Approval for USDC-Native Derivatives Clearinghouse
Coinbase has secured approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate as a derivatives clearing organization, marking a major milestone in its expansion into the US regulated derivatives market. This move allows Coinbase Clearing to use Circle's USDC stablecoin for settlement and collateral.
The CFTC registration of Coinbase Clearing LLC completes Coinbase's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling it to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement, as stated by General Counsel Molly Abraham. The platform will act as an intermediary between buyers and sellers in the futures and options market, ensuring that both sides of a trade meet their financial obligations.
Coinbase Clearing's approach is different from traditional systems, which rely on bank-based dollar transfers. The company plans to offer clearing services to direct market participants and customers of FCMs that join as clearing members. Trades will be fully collateralized, with enough collateral in place to cover required obligations.
