Coinbase Wins with CLARITY Act Failure
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong believes that the US Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act could benefit his exchange by preventing major Wall Street firms from entering the crypto market under clearer rules.
The legislation, which aimed to provide regulatory clarity for the industry, would have likely attracted more traditional financial institutions to crypto, increasing competition for Coinbase. However, Armstrong argued that this increased competition could be a mixed blessing, as it would also open the door to new competitors.
'Every major financial services company in the world would have started integrating crypto with regulatory clarity,' Armstrong noted. 'We would have had tons more competition.'
The executive acknowledged that without the CLARITY Act, Coinbase could face less competition, but he also maintained that the exchange is better equipped to navigate complex regulations.
'It's a little bit more permissive to have the SEC and CFTC do it,' Armstrong said, referring to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which are developing rules for the industry.
