Coinbase's Ambitious Expansion Plans Fuel Stock Surge
Coinbase Global (COIN) is making waves in the financial markets with its ambitious expansion plans, causing its stock to surge by 23% over the past three months. Despite being down more than 40% from its 52-week highs, the company's vision for a future beyond spot trading is gaining traction among investors.
Coinbase has transformed itself from a simple cryptocurrency exchange into a comprehensive platform with four separate trading pillars: spot crypto, derivatives, tokenized equities, and prediction markets. The company now runs 12 different product lines, each generating over $100 million annually, according to Citi's research director Peter Christiansen.
The key driver of Coinbase's growth is its prediction markets segment, which has crossed $100 million in annualized revenue within months of launching. This product has shown remarkable resilience, with daily active traders tripling and daily revenue quadrupling after the introduction of crypto binaries.
Coinbase is also making waves by giving everyday U.S. retail traders a chance to directly buy shares in initial public offerings (IPOs), historically reserved for large institutional investors. The company's allocation system favors long-term investors, and selling IPO shares within 30 days can result in being barred from future IPO participation.
