Coinbase's ETH Holdings Spark Debate Over Revenue Management on Layer 2 Networks
A controversy has emerged regarding Coinbase's management of revenue generated by its Layer 2 network, Base. The issue centers on whether the company is selling assets linked to network revenue rather than holding or reinvesting them into the ecosystem.
Critics argue that large Layer 2 networks like Base should retain a greater portion of their revenue in ETH. However, Jesse Pollak, a Coinbase representative, defends the company's strategy by emphasizing its broader exposure and role in Ethereum's infrastructure.
Pollak notes that Coinbase has held 150,000 ETH for years, which represents an exposure worth approximately $362 million at current prices. He also highlights the company's involvement in EVM development, EIP-4844 implementation, and USDC infrastructure, demonstrating its vested interest in Ethereum's success.
The debate touches on a larger question regarding the relationship between the ecosystem and its Layer 2 networks. As more activity migrates to Base and other rollup networks, the distribution of value between Ethereum and companies building businesses on top of it becomes increasingly important.
