Coinbase's New Vice Chair Sees Regulatory Peace on the Horizon
Ryan VanGrack, Coinbase's newly appointed Vice Chair and head of corporate affairs, is signaling a shift in the company's regulatory posture. Gone are the days of courtroom battles and enforcement actions, as VanGrack frames the crypto industry's future in terms of growth, innovation, and clear federal rules.
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) has gained tremendous momentum with bipartisan Senate support, according to VanGrack, who describes it as being on the one-yard line. This legislation aims to establish a federal regulatory framework that draws clear jurisdictional lines between the SEC and CFTC when it comes to digital assets.
VanGrack's appointment marks a deliberate pivot from the enforcement-first approach of his predecessor, Paul Grewal, who will step down on July 31, 2026. VanGrack brings deep familiarity with both the regulatory apparatus and institutional finance world, having previously held roles at Citadel Securities and serving as an SEC official.
As Coinbase expands into equities trading, futures, prediction markets, and AI tools, it's positioning itself less as a crypto exchange and more as a full-spectrum financial services provider. This shift comes with both opportunities and risks, as lawmakers have moved past the question of whether crypto should exist and started wrestling with how it should be regulated.
