Coldcard Breach Exposes Fundamental Vulnerability of Cryptocurrencies
A recent security breach of Coldcard hardware wallets has led to a significant theft of Bitcoin. According to reports, an attacker was able to steal approximately $70.2 million worth of BTC in just 41 minutes due to a firmware flaw affecting multiple generations of the wallet.
Ari Paul, founder of BlockTower Capital, stated that this incident highlights the fundamental vulnerability of cryptocurrencies. He argued that neither self-custody nor third-party custody offers complete protection against such breaches.
Paul noted that even if users store their assets themselves, they may still lose them to a compromise like the one seen with Coldcard. Similarly, storing assets with a custodian does not guarantee safety, as many have been hacked in the past and left investors without compensation.
Erik Voorhees, founder of ShapeShift, countered Paul's views by pointing out that while there is no single storage system that is perfectly risk-free, self-custody still represents a viable option for users.
