Coldcard Incident Does Not Break Self-Custody or Hardware Wallets

A recent incident involving Coldcard hardware wallets has left some users worried about the security of their Bitcoin holdings. However, experts at Trezor argue that the issue was specific to one company's product and does not affect other manufacturers' devices.

The problem arose when it was discovered that certain Coldcard wallets had weak randomness in their seed generation process, allowing hackers to drain funds from affected accounts. But this incident does not mean that self-custody or hardware wallets are broken.

Trezor emphasizes the importance of proper setup and management of Bitcoin holdings, including using a solid single-signature wallet as a baseline. While multisig wallets can offer additional security features, they also come with complexity and fees.

The company stresses that self-custody is a skill that requires practice and education, and that users should not be discouraged from owning their own keys due to the recent incident. In fact, Trezor believes that making ownership feel simple and convenient will help more people adopt self-custody.
