Congress Probed Over MSCI's Index Provider Standards
The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) has called on Congress to investigate MSCI's index provider standards after the company revived a proposal that would exclude Strategy and Metaplanet from its indexes. The move would cut these companies off from trillions of dollars in American retirement savings, which are tied to MSCI's stock market indexes.
BPI argues that MSCI is wielding too much power by excluding certain companies, citing the index provider's ability to make or break a company's inclusion in its indexes. This can have far-reaching consequences, as when a company is removed from an index, it triggers a rebalancing of funds tracking the benchmark, leading to losses for investors.
BPI points out that three major index firms - MSCI, S&P Dow Jones Indices, and FTSE Russell - control 54% of the market. This concentration of power has led BPI to call on Congress to scrutinize MSCI's exclusion decisions, which it describes as 'discretionary'.
