Connecticut Warns Consumers of Offshore DeFi Risks After $200K Loss
A Connecticut resident has lost $200,000 to an unregulated decentralized finance (DeFi) cryptocurrency exchange after being deceived by someone claiming to know them.
The state's attorney general and banking commissioner issued a consumer alert highlighting financial losses, high-risk leverage, security threats, and limited avenues for recovering funds.
The alert named seven offshore DeFi trading platforms that officials said operate beyond U.S. regulatory protections: GMX, Gains Network, dYdX, Aevo, Drift Protocol, Vertex Protocol, and Hyperliquid.
Connecticut's attorney general warned consumers about the dangers of these platforms, which offer high leverage - up to 250x in some cases - and limited recourse for investors if something goes wrong.
