Consensys-Developed Linea Faces Centralization Risks
Joseph Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum, established Consensys in 2015. Before founding Consensys, Lubin worked on various projects, including eMagine's Identrus project and held a position as VP of Technology in Private Wealth.
In 2016, Consensys launched Infura to simplify interactions between MetaMask users and the Ethereum network. This infrastructure helped scale MetaMask to 143 million users by 2025.
Linea, developed by Consensys as a Type 2 zkEVM, shares similar patterns with Infura. However, Linea currently runs a centralized sequencer managed by Consensys, which creates risks of censorship and MEV extraction.
In June 2024, Linea paused its sequencer for one hour after a Velocore DEX exploit caused $6.8 million in losses. The incident highlights the centralization risks associated with Linea's current architecture.
