Core DAO Faces Emergency Hard Fork Over Excess Validator Rewards

Core DAO is planning an emergency hard fork after a group of validators received more CORE rewards than intended. The excess reward activity has been contained, but not before it caught the attention of multiple crypto exchanges, which restricted CORE transfers.

The incident occurred when a small group of 'malicious' validators were able to collect additional CORE rewards through the protocol's issue mechanism. Core DAO said user assets were never at risk, and the planned upgrade will apply prospectively, leaving the blockchain unchanged.

Exchanges took different measures in response, with Coinbase temporarily disabling transfers to and from the Core network. Other platforms suspended deposits and withdrawals due to security concerns or 'wallet maintenance'.
