CoreWeave Stock Rallies but Faces Mounting Risks and Challenges
CoreWeave's stock has rebounded sharply, reaching $91.90 on Tuesday, up over 50% from its lowest point this year. The rally mirrors gains in other neocloud companies like IREN and Nebius, as well as broader AI industry surges led by Nvidia, AMD, Dell, and Broadcom. CoreWeave, a key player in the AI sector, provides computing solutions to major firms such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Microsoft. Its revenue backlog has swollen to over $104 billion, driven by significant deals with Meta ($35 billion), OpenAI ($22 billion), and Jane Street ($6 billion).
The company's financial performance remains robust, with quarterly revenue soaring 112% to $2.6 billion. Analysts expect annual revenue to hit $12.87 billion this year, a 150% jump from last year, with projections of $26.7 billion next year. Despite this optimism, CoreWeave faces substantial risks. Capital expenditure is rising, with plans to spend between $35 billion and $39 billion this year, following $29.2 billion in spending over the past five quarters. Rising costs for servers, GPUs, CPUs, and storage are pushing the company to seek more funding through debt and equity.
Depreciation and amortization have also surged, reaching over $1.3 billion, up from $560 million in the same period last year, accounting for over 52% of total revenue. The company's assumption of a 5-year useful life for GPUs contrasts with Michael Burry's view of a 2- to 3-year lifespan, contributing to rising bond yields. CoreWeave recently raised $1.1 billion through a junk bond offering. Additionally, competition is intensifying, with companies like Nscale and Lambda, as well as Bitcoin mining firms like Riot Platforms and MARA Holdings, diversifying into the AI data center industry.
Technically, CoreWeave's stock has formed a head-and-shoulders pattern, with a neckline at $66.55. This pattern suggests potential downside risk if the stock breaks below that level. The stock has been consolidating along the 50-day and 100-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMA), indicating ongoing pressure.
