Cosmos (ATOM) Plummets 8.3% Amid DeFi Exploit and Profit Taking

Cosmos (ATOM) plummeted by 8.3% over the past 24 hours due to a DeFi exploit in the Cosmos ecosystem, which damaged short-term confidence and triggered profit-taking.

The exploit occurred on Osmosis, a leading Cosmos DEX, where an attacker took advantage of a vulnerability on Nomic, a Bitcoin bridge, allowing them to double-spend nBTC and freeze 22.65 BTC. This compromised about 36% of allBTC backing and 30% of Osmosis' BTC exposure.

The incident led to an emergency chain upgrade and a plan to use governance and the community pool to compensate affected users, which is reassuring for recovery but highlights smart contract and governance risks in Cosmos DeFi.

The decline also came on the heels of a strong ATOM rally following the announcement of the 17-member 'Cosmos Partner Network', aimed at helping banks and financial institutions move tokenized deposits and digital asset services from pilots to production. This narrative build around tokenization and banking use cases contributed to ATOM's earlier surge.
