Credit Union Crypto Divide Widens as Early Adopters Gain Momentum
A recent PYMNTS Intelligence study reveals that credit unions are sharply divided on cryptocurrency adoption. The 'Credit Union Innovation Readiness' playbook found that 35% of credit unions identify as early launchers, actively engaged with cryptocurrency. In contrast, among self-described laggards, only 2% are actively engaged, creating a significant 33-percentage-point divide.
The research showed that among quick followers, 35% say they are well or fully prepared to offer cryptocurrency, but only 10% are actively engaged. The biggest readiness gap is among quick followers. Members, however, are sending a different signal: 17% already own cryptocurrency, increasing to 27% among Gen Z and Millennial members.
The study found that early launchers are preparing to broaden their crypto capabilities, with 43% planning to support links to external crypto wallets over the next three years. Early launchers also cited execution challenges, such as core-system or technology limitations and internal expertise or talent gaps. Laggards, on the other hand, focused on risk, citing regulatory uncertainty and reputational or brand risk.
