Credit unions may attract younger members by integrating digital currencies through familiar digital wallets, according to a May 2026 PYMNTS Intelligence report. The study, produced with Velera, highlights that younger consumers show the most interest in cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. The report suggests that presenting these digital assets through wallets can make the experience more approachable, similar to how a familiar dashboard eases driving a new car.
The findings reveal that wallets significantly boost interest in stablecoins among credit union members. Some 12% express strong interest in using stablecoins through a digital wallet, compared to just 5% for direct stablecoin payments. For cryptocurrencies, 10.7% show strong interest when wallets are involved, versus 6.8% for direct payments. These figures suggest that the accessibility of digital wallets plays a crucial role in member engagement.
Millennials, in particular, are more receptive to cryptocurrency payments when wallets are part of the equation. Across the surveyed population, strong interest in cryptocurrency payments rises from 31% to 35% with wallet integration. Similarly, stablecoin interest increases from 28.4% to 32%. These insights point to a potential strategy for credit unions aiming to engage younger consumers.
The report advises a measured approach, noting that about 67% of credit union members are unaware if their institution supports cryptocurrency, and 70% are unsure about stablecoins. While most members still show little interest, the study recommends investing in wallet infrastructure, possibly through a FinTech partnership, to cater to interested members without overcommitting resources.
