Cronos Blockchain Halted After $66M-$75M Lending Market Exploit
The Cronos blockchain halted on August 30, 2026, after an attacker exploited Tectonic, the largest lending protocol on the chain. The attack drained roughly $66 million to $75 million from the lending market.
Tectonic had approximately $121.7 million before the attack, accounting for about 46% of all capital deposited in Cronos DeFi. Outstanding loans stood at around $82.7 million.
The attacker drove up the price of TONIC, the protocol's governance token, and used it as collateral to borrow assets from the pools. The proceeds were then moved across a bridge to another blockchain.
Cronos' validators halted block production within minutes of identifying the exploit. The chain remains frozen, holding onto most of the attacker's proceeds while freezing other positions on the chain.
